Technical Writer - Field Services Training (Oil & Gas Equipment)
Job Description
This role is remote with occasional travel (typically once every few months for approximately one week).
Candidates may be located anywhere in the U.S.
What You’ll Do
- Develop comprehensive Trainer Guides, Student Guides, and Verification/Assessment Guides for equipment and field services training.
- Translate complex technical, mechanical, and operational content into clear, usable, and instructionally effective training materials.
- Apply adult learning and instructional design principles to ensure materials support knowledge transfer, skill development, and safe performance.
- Partner closely with SMEs, field service engineers, and trainers to gather, validate, and refine content.
- Create step-by-step procedures, job aids, checklists, diagrams, and troubleshooting content aligned to real-world field conditions.
- Ensure all materials align with safety standards, regulatory and compliance requirements, and industry best practices.
- Manage updates and revisions based on equipment changes, operational feedback, and continuous improvement input from the field.
- Proven experience writing training manuals for oil & gas equipment or adjacent high-reliability industries such as nuclear, military, utilities, aviation, or manufacturing.
- Demonstrated experience creating trainer-facing and learner-facing materials for instructor-led, blended, or field-based training.
- Strong ability to interpret technical documentation and operational procedures and translate them into effective training content.
- Background as a trainer, operator, or field professional with the ability to “speak the language of learning,” not just technical documentation.
- Excellent writing, organization, and attention to detail.
- Experience working directly with SMEs and field-based teams.
- Previous experience as a nuclear operator, military operator/trainer, or technical instructor in safety-critical environments.
- Field services, maintenance, or operations background.
- Familiarity with instructional design methodologies and adult learning principles.
- Experience with structured documentation standards and content governance.
Duration: 6-month contract to start with likely extensions through March 2027
Hours: Up to 40 hours per week
Location: Virtual
The pay range for this is $60.00 to $65.00 per hour on W2 basis. Individual pay is determined by a number of factors, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, relevant education, certifications and specific work location.
