Instructional Designer/eLearning Developer (Machinery Repair), Virtual (Some Travel to Ohio)

Findlay, OH 45840

Posted: 07/02/2024 Job Category: Instructional Design - eLearning Job Number: 14321

Job Description

Our client, a large manufacturing company with global locations, operates two equipment repair facilities in Ohio (Findlay and Miami, OH). They are seeking a skilled Instructional Designer/eLearning Developer who is also able to produce and edit videos to create first generation eLearning on specific equipment repair procedures.

The qualified consultant will have knowledge and/or a background in mechanical and/or electrical processes and be comfortable with related nomenclature and processes. The client is seeking a consultant who will travel occasionally to either Findlay or Miami Ohio to video equipment repair processes to be embedded into the eLearning modules.

The repair processes that will require eLearning tutorials are for very specific repair tasks in which there is currently no documentation. These are the more esoteric repair procedures. In this role, you will need to learn these processes yourself so you can take the lead in documenting processes with the assistance of SME’s. You will then use this documentation to create eLearning tutorials for maintenance personnel working in these specific repairs.

The client has a strong operations and mechanical background but has not worked extensively in creating training previously. Therefore, it will be important to educate the client but also allow the client to lead in terms of available hours and timelines related to pumping out training. There may not be time to conduct an analysis phase. The client company does have an LMS for hosting the training. Since this is first generation training there will need to be a strategy and design phase at the beginning of the project to understand what the client is seeking and what can be produced based on timelines.

Skills & Experience Requirements:
  • 10+ years’ Instructional Design experience serving large companies, solid knowledge of adult learning principles, and best practices & current trends for eLearning.
  • Must have 2+ years’ experience creating eLearning for technical systems training involving machinery and/or electrical systems.
  • Must have solid knowledge of, or background working with, mechanical or electrical systems to understand nomenclature and how these systems work at a basic level.
  • Must be enthusiastic about learning the company’s repair processes at a detailed level to then create written documentation for the eLearning modules with SME assistance.
  • Highly preferred: Experience producing and editing videos of processes (must provide all equipment and software). Alternatively, must have experience guiding a video production resource in properly capturing what is needed (aka video storyboarding capabilities).
  • Highly proficient in Articulate Storyline and Rise (must provide laptop and Articulate 360 license).
  • Must be very efficient, agile, and able to develop modules quickly.
  • Ability to work successfully with client new to learning and development and able to explain the process.
  • Must be willing to step outside the ADDIE process to get modules pumped out quickly.
Start: Late-July to mid-August (client will be flexible for the right resource).
Duration: Likely ongoing starting with 3 months (client has many ongoing needs).
Hours: Flexible but should be 20 (or more at times) hours per week with flexible working hours.
Location: Virtual/remote role with some limited travel to either Findlay, OH or Miami, OH to produce repair process videos.
